On February 7th, 2017 I launched my blog. Little did I know it would change my life and whole outlook on blogging. I never had the intention to start a blog, it actually happened on accident as more and more people would say "Lex! You need to start a blog!"
I remember following my favorite bloggers since I was a junior in high school. I thought about one day starting a blog about fashion and my personal style, but was unsure on how to get started and what I would need. I remember creating 5 different Instagram accounts to showcase my style and fashion finds, but never seemed to adhere to them and commit.
When I moved to Los Angeles, California the ideas and brainstorming started popping off and I was able to bring my vision to life a lot more quickly and was able to gather tons of inspiration. I enjoy sharing things and telling stories, so I had to figure out where to go from there.
Often times, I would find myself getting discouraged because I didn’t (and still don’t) have all of the necessary equipment to start and execute a blog. I realized it’s not about what you don’t have, but more so that you just START and utilize what youhave already right in front of you. I doubted myself and my capabilities over and over again and would dwell on it. I would look at other fashion bloggers’ content and think to myself "I wish I looked like that… I wish I had that…" " I wish I would’ve thought of that". I use to think I couldn’t make a blog because I’m just a girl from Toledo, Ohio and I do not come from wealth and luxury; therefore, I would compare myself to other bloggers who have made their name a lot quicker because of the resources they were able to attain for themselves, such as a high quality camera, Adobe Creative Cloud, expensive photo apps, Mac desktop, personal Graphic Designer and/or Photographer, etc.
I eventually snapped out of that very fast especially with moving to LA (that’s a completely different story.) I knew if I continued to think that way, I would never actually begin. Blogging isn’t an expense and it’s not about trying to keep up with so and so; it doesn’t have to be fancy, although fashion blogging can seem very superficial at times, but it should represent you and your authenticityand should also eventually become an investment.
Before launching my website, I started off making an official Instagram page that I have fully committed to for my personal fashion style and lifestyle inspiration. It’s called @stylewithlex (go follow it hehe). I continue to stay consistent with my posts, but that wasn’t enough to reach my audience. While keeping up with @stylewithlex, I got into courses like computer rendering, computer graphics, advanced digital imaging and layout & design, which I was able to capitalize on what I was learning and use that to create my very own website that turned into my personal online blog. Not only in the blogging world, but in other professions, people expect to start at the top of the totem pole and once they realize it doesn’t happen like that, they quit. (not everyone, but most – especially our generation today.) We can’t just hope things will fall onto our laps, we have to master the concept of hard work and the go-getting in order to get to the top and to maintain it. Absolutely nothing in life that is worth having comes easy, because if it did everyone would have it and everyone would be doing it, and that is where the person(s) who are willing to work, will distinguish themselves from the rest. So just START and disregard any negative thoughts or doubts.
After a few months of playing around with Wix Website Editor and contemplating publishing my website, I decided to "just do it!" What was there to lose, right? I put all the noise aside. Since I launched my blog on February 7th 2017, I have over 200 subscribers, and I have been able to inspire many, reply to emails and accept content requests and collaborations. I absolutely love what I do and because of YOU, I keep going! I am able to inspire you, and you inspire me, which is very special.
There are many things in life that make me happy, but sharing my content via blogging is what I love and enjoy always. Not once do I ever not want to improve my blog and my every day skill set. I am always striving to learn about new & different topics in the industry including the digital/entertainment world. I try my best to update myself on culture, art, travel and music which tie into fashion and trends. Everyone has to start somewhere and the struggles along the way build character and makes your journey that much more rewarding and you’ll want to tell your story again and again.
Ultimately, when I blog, I feel alive and I hope one day I can turn my blog into a business and continue to serve you.
Find your passion and marry it. You’re a work in progress and you sure are worth it.
Whatever your story is, some day you will look back on all the progress you made, and be so glad you didn’t give up when you felt like that was your only option.
